Objectives

At end of this program, you will be able to:

  • Understand the general concepts and a historical perspective – on IPRs and the TRIPS Agreement. 
  • Understand the fundamentals of intellectual property law.
  • Learn about the provisions and obligations under TRIPS agreements.
  • Learn how the TRIPS Agreement evolves, most importantly through dispute settlement and the built-in agenda.
  • Develop skills to identify, protect, and enforce intellectual property rights.
  • Gain insights into the intersection of IP and international trade.
  • Gain insights into types of IPRs, and the interlinkages between IPRs and development. 
  • Master key aspects of IPRs, including sector-specific impacts of IPRs, the impact of IPRs on gross domestic product (GDP) and the impact of IPRs on the private sector and key public policy issues. 
  • Understand the flexibilities in the Agreement to meet the specific needs of developing and least-developed Members of the WTO;

In addition, you will understand:

  • how national IPR regimes could best be designed to benefit developing countries within the context of international agreements, including TRIPS (The Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights or TRIPS is the 1994 treaty negotiated through the World Trade Organization that sets forth the international minimum standard of IPR protection.);
  • how the international framework of rules and agreements might be improved and developed – for instance in the area of traditional knowledge – and the relationship between IPR rules and regimes covering access to genetic resources; 
  • what is the broader policy framework needed to complement intellectual property regimes including for instance controlling anti-competitive practices through competition policy and law.
