Pastoral and Agro-pastoral Livelihoods in the Greater Horn of Africa

Abstract

This book reviews the (past, and current ) trends of vulnerability and livelihoods of pastoral
and agro-pastoral communities in the Greater Horn of Africa (GHA) to provides a fresh
understanding of (i) the causes and conditions of household food insecurity in the GHA; (ii)
the extent to which droughts and conflicts have influenced people’s livelihoods in the GHA ;
(iii) the resilience of the communities– i.e. under what conditions households are more or
less likely to cope with food crisis; (iv) mechanisms to give early warning of potential food
shortages, local and national capacities to mitigate food crisis; (iv) government policies and
service delivery; and to (v) facilitate an exchange of views with WFP offices and collaborating
partners based in the GHA, including the international donor community.
